Kunzum la is one of the highest motorable mountain passes in India and is situated at the height of 15060 feet (4590 meters) and separates Lahaul Valley from Spiti Valley. When travelling from Manali, Batal in the Lahaul Valley and Losar located in the Spiti Valley and the starting and ending points of Kunzum Pass. Located here is Godess Durga (Kunjum) temple which guards over the pass and keeps all the evil powers away. All local drivers and tourists take a round of the temple to seek the blessings of Goddess Durga. You get a 360 degree of snow-capped mountains and you can take some memorable photographs here.
While crossing the Kunzum Pass it is likely that you will suffer from acute mountain sickness is you are not properly acclimatized. In case it happens we suggest that you immediately drive down to lower altitude. The road condition from Batal to Losar through Kunzum pass is not good at all, there is no meal road, just mud and gravel. From Kunzum pass you have amazing views of Bara Shigri Glacier which is longest glacier in Himachal and second longest in India, the longest being the Gangotri Glacier. The trek from Kunzum Pass to Chandra Taal lake is very popular amongst the trekkers. Kunzum pass opens for just around 4½ months in a year, from mid of May to end of September.
