The village is around 5 kms drive from Hikkim Village, the road is just mud and gravel and winding all the way up. The Govt. sign board perhaps gives the best description as the “Highest Village in the World connected by a motorable road”. The village is at a height 15027 feet (4587 meters). The village is located in a bowl-shaped depression surrounded on all sides by mountains. The Tangyuth Monastery located at the entrance of the Komic village belongs to Sakya sect is almost 500 years old and also the highest located monastery in India. The interior and exterior of the monastery is painted in bright colours. From the monastery the village is 500 meters walk and this walk can take a toll on you due to lack of oxygen in the air and cold winds blowing all the time. The hills around the village are rich in marine fossils.
As the land is mostly barren the villagers are unable to cultivate anything, so most of them are shepherds rearing sheep, horses and yaks. If you are looking to hike around the hills here, it is best to start early and return by 2:00 pm as the temperature drops rapidly after that. Best monts to visit are from mid May to end September. There are very few limited home stays available here for tourists and the monastery also offers a few rooms for tourists.
