Located at an elevation of 16040 feet (4900 meters), is Baralachala Pass, which connect Himachal Pradesh to Ladakh. It is located at a distance of 73 Kms from Keylong and is a high plateau where three mountain ranges meet, namely Pir Panjal range, Zanskar range and The Great Himalayan range. It is also the starting point of two very popular treks – Suray Tal Trek and Chandra Tal trek. When travelling from Manali to Leh it is advisable to cross the Pass before the noon or as early as possible. As the day temperature rises, the snow melts and the water current in the streams becomes too strong to cross and becomes dangerous.
The best time to travel is from June to October. The road conditions of the road are reasonably good except for the monsoon period, when the road can be treacherous and we advise against travelling during that time. Once you cross Baralachala pass, Leh is 282 Kms from here. If you are crossing Baralachala Pass you will need to carry attested copies of your passport or adhaar card or voter ID. Foreign nationals need to carry their passports and visa.
